For my visualization project, I chose to represent moments from the story of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) through memes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. As the introduction of the video explains, the two men are the most famous and gifted players of their generation, often considered the two best footballers of all time yet they possess completely opposing qualities, public perception, and personalities off the field. Ronaldo is a very athletic, outgoing and by his own admission conventionally handsome man who scores loads of goals, and loves all the glory. Messi on the other hand is small, very quiet, barely offers more than a mumble in interviews, and often considered socially awkward. I found that these two contrasting personas would help be an effective metaphor for the characters in the film, who are often image and fame obsessed, constantly wanting to be considered better than their rival. Ronaldo represents the more arrogant parts of Betty and Camilla, whereas Messi is often the more reserved Diane. However, this tie is not carried through all the way, and often in the video I use each player to represent other characters (Cowboy, Aunt Ruth etc.) Even though there is not a perfect link between the players and characters, deciphering such a complex film through the language of memes is an important means of processing and understanding the film's content, while also looking at its messaging. The above quote from Lynch himself asserts that intuition is necessary to interpret abstraction, and to many of my generation, niche memes are ostensibly a part of our vocabulary. That by placing the videos of the players with specific events from the film, the emotion that it produces can be thought stimulating regarding my own interpretations. After all, one of the most ubiquitous forms of communication in recent times are memes, and by presenting the duality between Ronaldo and Messi as analogous to the many paradoxes present in Mulholland Drive (Rita/Betty, Rita/Camilla, Camilla/Betty) it affords myself, and hopefully the viewer a more narrow focus on the emotions I experienced, with a few gratuitous memes sprinkled throughout. All of the clips I used are popular memes among football fans, and represent similar sentiments to those that I felt while watching the film, which caused the link in my own mind immediately. I can add my notes if needed to see my process.
